Haymarket Riot occurs in Chicago.

May 4, 1886

A bomb thrown after police attempt to break up the demonstration kills eight police officers and four protesters and wounds more than 70 others. Eight of the organizers of the demonstration are subsequently arrested and found guilty of causing the deaths. Four are hanged and the other four receive prison sentences. The event is subsequently credited with energizing the American labor movement.
